For the first time in the history of the UN Conference of the Parties (COP) on climate change, "Digitalization Day" was observed on the fifth day of COP29, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, on November 16. The conference, which began on November 11, will continue until November 22 under the framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Representing Daffodil International University (DIU) at the conference were Dr. Imran Hossain, Trustee Board Member and Associate Professor of Development Studies, Senior Lecturer Samiha Khan, and student Fatema Tuz Zohra Sadia. As delegates from Bangladesh and DIU, they pledged to collaborate on tackling climate challenges and advancing sustainable development goals (SDGs).

DIU has integrated environmental challenges and SDG initiatives into its academic programs, fostering practical education and community-focused activities. In 2023 alone, DIU published 1,139 Scopus-indexed research papers, making it the top private university in Bangladesh for research and the second overall among all universities in the country. The university also actively promotes renewable energy solutions and raises climate awareness within its campus and neighboring communities.

On the opening day, Samiha Khan spoke during the session titled "EcoCash Global Trade Hub - Towards a Sustainable Living Community". She emphasized the urgency of addressing climate crises and highlighted DIU's initiatives involving students in preserving the environment and responding to climate-related disasters. She stated, “Our efforts are not limited to our campus; we aim to make these practices a habit on both local and international levels, leading to practical solutions for environmental preservation.”

The UN anticipates actionable outcomes from COP29, including significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and strategies to safeguard lives and livelihoods from the escalating impacts of climate change. Additionally, updated national climate action plans under the Paris Agreement will be presented, with implementation beginning in early 2025.
